Irish movies - DVD Recommendations
Of course, most of all Irish movies are about the country's history. Irish history is even an important part of European history and especially for the Irish-British relationship. But not all of our recommendations are historical dramas, we have also a highly-acclaimed musical film.
Natürlich behandeln die meisten irischen Filme die Landesgeschichte. Irische Geschichte ist auch ein wichtiger Teil europäischer Geschichte, besonders auch für die irisch-britische Beziehung. Aber nicht alle unsere Empfehlungen sind historische Dramen, wir haben auch einen viel umjubelten Musical Film dabei.
"Once", Irleand 2007.
Musical film written and directed by John Carney. Set in Dublin, this naturalistic drama stars musicians Glen Hansard (of popular Irish rock band The Frames) and Markéta Irglová as struggling musicians. Collaborators prior to making the film, Hansard and Irglová composed and performed all but one of the original songs in the movie. "Once" got rewarded with an Academy Award for "Best Original Song".

Gedreht in Dublin zeigt dieses Drama zwei Musikern Glen Hansard (Mitglied der populären irischen Band The Frames) und Markéta Irglová welche als Musiker kometenhaft augestiegen sind und nun am Rande der Existenz leben. Vor dem Film haben sich Hansard und Irglová zusammengetan um alle Songs für den Film zu komponieren. "Once" wurde mit einem Oscar für den besten Original-Song ausgezeichnet.
"The Wind That Shakes The Barley", Ireland 2006.
Historical drama directed by Ken Loach. This movie set during the Irish War of Independence (1919–21) and the Irish Civil War (1922–23). Written by long-time Loach collaborator Paul Laverty, this drama tells the story of two County Cork brothers, played by Cillian Murphy and Pádraic Delaney, who join the Irish Republican Army (IRA) to fight for Irish independence from Great Britain. Widely praised, the film won the Palme d'Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.
Regie führte bei diesem historischen Drama Ken Loach. Dieser Film spielt während des irischen Unabhängkeits-Krieges (1919-1921) und dem irischen Bürgerkrieg (1922-1923). Das Drehbuch schrieb Loach's langjähriger Mitarbeiter Paul Laverty. In der Geschichte geht es um zwei Brüder aus Cork (gespielt von Cillian Murphy und Pádraic Delaney) welche sich der Irish Republican Army (IRA) anschliessen um für die irische Unabhängigkeit von Grossbritannien zu kämpfen. Dieser Film erhielt grossen Zuspruch und gewann die "Palme d'Or" bei den Filmfestspielen von Cannes 2006.

Biopic, directed by Neil Jordan about Michael Collins, the Irish patriot and revolutionary who died in the Irish Civil War. Starring Liam Neeson as Michael Collins, music composed by Elliot Goldenthal with performances from Sinéad O'Connor.
Regie: Neil Jordan. Biografie über Michael Collins, dem irischen Patrioten und Revolutionär, welcher im irischen Bürgerkrieg gefallen ist. Die Hauptrolle spielt Liam Neeson, die Musik wurde geschrieben von Elliot Goldenthal mit Auftritten von Sinéad O'Connor.
