Homeless World Cup

The "Homeless World Cup" is an international football (soccer) tournament, where teams made up entirely of homeless people compete. The event is held annually. It was at the end of the 2001 International Network of Street Papers Conference in Cape Town that Mel Young, Co-founder The Big Issue Scotland, and Harald Schmied, editor of Megaphon, a street paper in Austria, came up with the idea for the Homeless World Cup. They decided to make it happen and 18 months later the first tournament took place in Graz, Austria. It was such a success that they decided to do more. Back in 2005, the project was rewarded with the UEFA Charity Cheque with a value of 1 Million Swiss Franc. This great idea is widely supported by UNO, UEFA, Vodafone, Nike and many more. All donations benefit the project.
The 2008 tournament will be held in Melbourne, Australia, December 1st to 7th, at two parks: Federation Square and Birrarung Marr. It will have a new record of participating projects. National Teams from 56 nations will gather in Melbourne, amongst them for the first time 8 all female teams competing in the Women's Cup. Der "Homeless World Cup" ist ein internationales Fußball-Turnier, das jährlich ausgetragen wird. Die Teams bestehen aus Obdachlosen. Das Turnier soll sie bei der Reintegration in die Gesellschaft unterstützen. Die Idee wurde am Ende der "International Network of Street Papers Conference" (Konferenz des Internationales Netzwerkes von Strassenzeitungen) in Kapstadt im Jahr 2001 geboren. Gegründet wurde die Weltmeisterschaft von Mel Young, Mitgründer der "The Big Issue Scotland" Strassenzeitung und Harald Schmied, Redaktuer des "Megaphon", einer Strassenzeitung in Österreich. Sie entschieden sich, diese Idee zu verwirklichen und 18 Monate später wurde die erste Meisterschaft in Graz, Österreich ausgetragen. Es war ein solcher Erflog, also entschieden sich die beiden mehr auf die Beine zu stellen. 2005 wurde das Projekt dem dem UEFA Charity Cheque in Höhe von 1 Million Schweizer Franken ausgezeichnet. Diese grossartige Idee wird unterstützt von der UNO, der UEFA, Vodafone, Nike und vielen anderen. Alle Erlöse sind zugunsten des Projektes bestimmt.
Das diesjährige Turnier findet in Melbourne, Australien vom 1. bis 7. Dezember statt. Spiele finden in zwei Parks statt: im Federation Square und Birrarung Marr mit einem neuen Rekord an teilnehmenden Projekten. Nationale Mannschaften aus 56 Ländern werden sich in Melbourne zusammen finden. Erstmalig auch 8 Frauen Mannschaften, die am "Women's Cup" teilnehmen. Mannschaften aus Irland, Kenia und Deutschland sind auch Teil des diesjährigen "Homeless World Cup". Mehr Informationen dazu hier.
